What are OpenVPN and L2TP/IPsec?
OpenVPN is a long-established open-source protocol that uses TLS and can run over UDP or TCP. You add a settings file to the app and connect.
L2TP/IPsec is a combination already built into many operating systems. There is nothing to install: you enter a server address, username, password and pre-shared key in your device’s VPN settings.
Where it does well
- OpenVPN has been in use for many years and has an app for almost every system
- L2TP/IPsec works without an app on many devices
- One plan covers both methods
- Available unlimited or by the gigabyte
What to keep in mind
- OpenVPN is usually heavier than WireGuard, which shows on slower phones
- L2TP/IPsec uses fixed ports, which makes it easier to block
- L2TP/IPsec is missing from the settings of some newer Android phones
- Each plan is for one user, and servers are in France and Germany only
Who it suits
Good for anyone who wants a long-standing, widely supported standard, or has a device where installing an app is awkward.
Common questions
What is the difference between OpenVPN and L2TP/IPsec?
OpenVPN uses a separate app and a settings file. L2TP/IPsec is part of the operating system and needs only a few details. If you can install an app, OpenVPN is usually the better choice.
Can I connect without installing an app?
Yes, with L2TP/IPsec, on devices that have it in their VPN settings, such as Windows and iPhone.
My Android phone has no L2TP option. What now?
Some newer phones do not have it. Install OpenVPN Connect instead: the same plan works with it.
Do I get both methods with one plan?
Yes. OpenVPN and L2TP/IPsec are one plan, so there is nothing extra to buy.
