What are Cisco AnyConnect and OpenConnect?
AnyConnect is Cisco’s VPN client, widely used in companies and organisations. Newer versions are called Cisco Secure Client. OpenConnect is an open-source client that works with the same kind of server.
Instead of a config file, you enter a server address and sign in with a username and password. The connection runs over TLS, the same technology HTTPS websites are built on.
Where it does well
- A simple sign-in with a server address, username and password
- One account works in both apps
- Servers in four countries, including the USA and Switzerland
- Available unlimited or by the gigabyte
What to keep in mind
- Each plan is for one user
- There is no OpenConnect app for iPhone here, so iOS uses Cisco Secure Client
- Cisco’s client can be harder to find on some platforms, which is why the Windows and Android files are mirrored on our server
Who it suits
Good for anyone who prefers a username and password to a config file, already knows these apps, or needs a location in the USA or Switzerland.
Common questions
Is Cisco Secure Client the same as AnyConnect?
Yes. Cisco releases newer versions of AnyConnect under the name Cisco Secure Client. You connect the same way in both.
Can I use AnyConnect and OpenConnect with the same plan?
Yes. They are sold as one plan, and the same account signs in to either app.
Which app should I use on an iPhone?
Install Cisco Secure Client from the App Store. We do not list an OpenConnect app for iOS.
How do traffic-based Cisco plans work?
You can choose any amount from 10 to 1,000 GB. If you use a lot, compare the price with the unlimited plan: past a certain amount, unlimited is the better deal.
